Organic Eggs: What Makes Them Different?

There are many types of eggs you can find on your supermarket shelves. Some will have different labels than others, generally related to USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) requirements and certifications. So, what exactly does it mean when an egg is labeled as USDA-Certified Organic?

USDA Organic Certification
Egg farmers must meet certain standards for chicken feed, raising environments and other standards in order to be classified as Organic by the USDA. Four of the most important requirements include:

  1. Cage-Free—Organically raised hens must not be confined to cages at all times. They are provided adequate room to exercise and socialize.
  2. Organic Diet—The feed that the hens eat must be certified Organic in its own right, primarily meaning it is sourced from plants and proteins not grown with pesticides. The grains and seeds they are fed are all non-GMO (genetically modified organisms) products.
  3. No Antibiotics or Hormones—The chickens also cannot be given any antibiotics or hormones.
  4. Seasonal Outdoor Access—Lastly, hens need to be required with at least seasonal access to outdoor spaces. This enables them to forage and graze naturally.

Organic and Humane
The above list represents some of the basic standards required for eggs to be certified as Organic by the USDA. Some farmers take it even further with their humane hen-raising practices. This is important to us at Chino Valley Ranchers. We strongly believe happy and healthy chickens produce better eggs. Organic eggs offer unique health benefits. They are free of pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and GMOs. Our feeds are specially formulated for the health and well-being of our hens, with fully Organic ingredients. Our chickens have ample room to roam in cage-free conditions. As a consumer, you can rest assured you are buying quality eggs from organically and humanely raised chickens when you see the USDA-Organic label on Chino Valley Ranchers egg products.

Organic
Organic eggs from Chino Valley Ranchers come from hens living on free-range farms. They are fed only the finest non-GMO grains and seeds from pesticide-free fields. In fact, we mill our own feed onsite at Southern California’s only dedicated organic poultry-free meal. Each egg is inspected to ensure it measures up to our standards of quality.

Organic Omega-3
Our Organic Omega-3 eggs come from hens who are fed an Organic diet rich in flax seed. This grain is naturally high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Each egg contains 225 mg of Omega-3 (ALA). This is known to have positive benefits for humans, including improved cardiovascular health.

Organic Omega-3 Soy Free Corn Free
These chickens are fed a special diet without any corn or soy, but rich in flax seed. These offer the same Omega-3 benefits without the soy or corn.

Pasture Raised Organic
Pasture raised hens are provided dedicated pastureland for them to roam freely and forage naturally. There are at least 108 square feet per bird. This raising approach combines a fully Organic diet of supplemental feed for healthier, happier chickens and great-quality eggs.
